This is the main culmination of my work over the last 8+ months. This render did not literally take over 8 straight months to make, it's just that all my previous 3-D SMB renders created in that time span served as stepping stones, leading to this final "8-bit magnum opus".
For those who may not know what this is, it's my 3D modeling take on the landmark 8bit video game Super Mario Bros., for the original Nintendo. I tried to cram everything but the proverbial kitchen sink into this render (unfortunately, I can't really find a way to incorporate Bowser, Podoboo, and Blooper in this deviation). Here's another 3 D SMB scene, featuring some Bloopers, so they don't feel too left out. [link]
Everything in this deviation is 'built' by plotting cubes side by side, not that unlike if I were to build everything with Lego blocks (which I'd like to start doing soon, if money permits). Some have asked what program I used; I used Bryce 5, but I imagine for this style of voxel modeling that any 3D modeling program could be used with generally the same results.
Please voice any ideas you may have as to how this could be improved, any c.c. is always appreciated. I promise I'll try to improve the bushes' 3-D appearance and also try to get some clouds in the sky, so check back for those updates.
Super Mario Bros. (and all characters, objects, & sprites within) is property of Nintendo (specifically demi-god Shigeru Miyamoto).
Freakin' incredible. I don't know how you could get any better than this either... the only thing that stands out to me as not completely "3D" are the bushes / shrubbery. I don't imagine they'd look very good with depth, and they don't hurt the image one bit, but I guess that's the last place you could work your 3D sprite magic. !

Heck yes, this is perfect. You haven't just extended the bits, you have actually made them form in the 3rd dimension. That is so cool. Keep up the great work.
Nice, you're back with new 3D stuff, very good. I like the way you've managed to incorporate so many different things into this picture, and especially I think it is cool the way you have the score, coins, time, etc. at the top. Again this reminds me of a 3D SMB game someone made at some point.
There are a lot of themes that run through the stock gallery many people have similar ideas but they pull them off in different ways. In this series of newsletters we will look at similar ideas but different outcomes.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
